India AI Salary Report 2026: Pay for 10 AI Roles, by Experience and City

AI & Data Science Salaries in India 2026 — role-by-role guide covering Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, MLOps Engineer, NLP Engineer, Prompt Engineer and Data Analyst pay bands

Salary data for AI roles in India is unusually unreliable. Search for any one role and you will find figures that disagree by a factor of seven.

For "prompt engineer salary in India," to take one example, Indeed reports an average of ₹4.59 LPA, Glassdoor ₹5.87 LPA, and 6figr ₹35 LPA. None of those sources is wrong. They are measuring different things, and almost nobody explains the difference.

Why the numbers disagree:

  • Job-posting aggregates (Indeed, Naukri) skew low. Most advertised roles are entry and mid-level, because senior hires happen through referral and executive search rather than public listings.
  • Self-reported profile data (6figr, Levels.fyi) skews high. People with strong packages are far more likely to publish them.
  • Glassdoor sits in between, blending both, which is why its figures usually land closest to what a mid-level candidate actually sees.

The bands below are the realistic ranges for what is actually offered, cross-checked across all three source types. Each role links to a detailed guide with company-level data, city variation, and the skills that move you up a band.

Figures reviewed September 2026. We update this page quarterly.

Key findings (September 2026)

  • MLOps pays the most at entry level: ₹8–12 LPA, against ₹6–10 LPA for ML engineers and ₹3–8 LPA for prompt engineers.
  • Senior ceilings cluster at ₹45–60 LPA across engineering roles; AI engineers at AI-first companies reach the top of that range.
  • The entry-level gap between roles is nearly 3×; by senior level it narrows sharply. Skills added in years 1–3 matter more than the first job title.
  • Non-coding AI roles start higher than many coding ones: AI-augmented business roles begin at ₹8–14 LPA.
  • City matters less than company type. Bengaluru pays about 25% above the national average for AI/ML engineers and Chennai about 5% below — but a GCC or AI-first startup in any city usually pays more than an IT services firm in Bengaluru.

What the Table Actually Tells You

Infrastructure skills pay more than modelling skills. MLOps engineers out-earn ML engineers at entry level and stay competitive at every band. Plenty of people can train a model; far fewer can deploy, monitor and version one in production. That scarcity is where the premium sits.

The entry-level spread is wider than the senior spread. Prompt engineering starts at ₹3 LPA and MLOps at ₹8 LPA — nearly 3x. By senior level the gap narrows considerably. Your first role matters less than most people assume; the skills you add over the following three years matter far more.

Specialisation beats generalisation in the middle. Computer vision and NLP engineers earn more at mid-level than generalist AI engineers, because depth in a domain is harder to hire for than breadth.

Non-technical AI roles are real and well paid. AI-augmented business roles start at ₹8–14 LPA without requiring code. This is the fastest-growing and least-understood segment of the Indian AI job market.

AI Salaries by City

Published city data is thin and inconsistent, so treat these as directional. The premiums below are for AI/ML engineers relative to the national average, from the Recrew 2026 AI/ML salary guide, alongside the number of global capability centres (GCCs) — the employers that drive much of the premium.

CityAI/ML pay vs national averageGCCsStrongest demandCity guide
Bengaluru+25%~487AI platforms, product engineeringAI course in Bangalore
Hyderabad+18%~273Pharma and life-sciences analyticsAI course in Hyderabad
Mumbai+15%~207Banking, risk, capital marketsAI course in Mumbai
Delhi NCR+8%~272Analytics and consultingAI course in Delhi NCR
PuneAbout average~178Automotive and manufacturingAI course in Pune
Chennai−5%~162Automotive, BFSI and engineering GCCsAI engineer salary in Chennai

One warning about city data: sources disagree even on the order. Indeed's ML-engineer city averages (from a small sample of 55 reports, August 2026) put Hyderabad and Chennai above Bengaluru, the opposite of most other sources. Small samples swing easily; the band ranges in the main table are more reliable than any single city average.

How to Move Up a Salary Band

Across every role guide linked above, the same skills recur as band-movers:

SkillRoles it liftsImpact
Production deployment (Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD)All engineering rolesVery high
Python beyond scriptingAll roles, including prompt engineeringVery high
RAG and LLM system designPrompt, NLP, AI EngineerVery high
Cloud platforms (AWS / GCP / Azure ML)All engineering rolesHigh
Model evaluation and monitoringML, MLOps, NLPHigh
Domain expertise (healthcare, finance, retail)Data Science, CV, NLPHigh
Communicating results to non-technical stakeholdersAll rolesUnderrated

The pattern is consistent: the people who get paid most are the ones who can ship a system, not just build a model. Every guide linked above reaches this conclusion independently from its own company-level data.

Which Role Should You Target?

It depends far more on your starting point than on the salary ceiling:

  • From software engineering → AI Engineer or MLOps. Your existing production experience transfers directly and is the exact thing that commands the premium.
  • From data analysis or BI → Data Scientist. The statistical grounding is already there; the gap is modelling and deployment.
  • From a non-technical background → AI-augmented business roles or prompt engineering. Both have genuine entry paths without a CS degree.
  • From academia or research → NLP or Computer Vision. Depth is rewarded, and research experience is a real differentiator.
  • Already in ML → MLOps. It is the clearest and best-paid step up from model building.

If you are unsure which path fits your background, our AI courses map to each of these tracks, and the individual role guides above go into far more detail on what each job actually involves day to day.

Methodology

  • Sources: Indeed, Glassdoor, 6figr, AmbitionBox and live job postings, cross-checked in September 2026. City premiums from the Recrew AI/ML engineer salary guide (2026); GCC counts from ETGCCWorld figures as compiled by V3 Staffing (2026).
  • What the bands represent: the realistic range of offered annual CTC (fixed plus variable, excluding ESOPs) for each experience band — not the full range of outliers.
  • Why we use ranges: job-posting sites under-report senior pay, self-reported sites over-represent top-tier companies, and averages hide both. Where sources disagreed, we weighted live postings and cross-source agreement.
  • Limits: these are market ranges, not guarantees. Company type, negotiation and specialisation can move an individual offer well outside a band.
  • Updates: reviewed quarterly. Next review: December 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI role pays the most in India?

At senior level, AI Engineer and MLOps Engineer roles reach the highest ceilings — ₹55–60 LPA+ at top product companies and global firms with India teams. At entry level, MLOps pays the most, typically ₹8–12 LPA.

Do I need a degree in AI or computer science?

For most engineering roles, no — a demonstrable portfolio matters more than the degree. Research-heavy NLP and computer vision roles at large labs are the main exception, where a Master's or PhD is often expected.

How much does an AI fresher earn in India?

Realistically ₹4–8 LPA depending on the role and the strength of your project portfolio. MLOps and infrastructure-leaning roles start higher; prompt engineering and analyst roles start lower.

Is the AI salary premium going to last?

The premium on pure model-building is already compressing as tooling improves. The premium on deployment, evaluation and system design is holding steady — which is why every guide above points toward production skills rather than modelling alone.

Are these salaries different in Chennai versus Bengaluru?

Bengaluru typically pays 10–20% more for equivalent roles, offset by higher living costs. Chennai's product and GCC ecosystem has narrowed that gap considerably since 2024. The city-specific guides above cover this in detail.

How often is this data updated?

Quarterly. These figures were reviewed in September 2026 against Indeed, Glassdoor, 6figr and live job postings.
